Textures in this texture pack may be changed for any of these reasons:

So items made of a material use the same palettes and elements as the material it's made out of(iron, leather)
So items are accurate to in other appearance in game(fishes, cake)
So things are animated that make sense to be animated (campfire while in hand, furnace)
So dyes all use different shapes
So problems created by other changes to this texture pack are lessened (enchanted books)
So raw copper isn't oxidized since they usually don't have exposure to oxygen
So inventory items that aren't perfect* replicas of their placed versions have outlines, or the reverse, placed blocks don't have outlines when they don't make sense in universe (seeds, nether wart)
So there are no stray pixels or random inconsistencies (string)
So things are more consistent to real life (honeycombs are now hexagonal)
So things that should have bottom textures have them (pumpkins, blast furnace)
So some items that looked to be made of incredibly similar materials as actual items made of those materials follow the same rules as those materials (the gold part of bells, diamond horse armor, also did this for "item picked up" statistics icon since it made it look a lot less ugly)
So there are no unnecessary mixels (hammer in smithing table GUI)
Other conditions may apply

Textures might not have changes for reasons such as these:

Changes a decorational block to not achieve the same function as it did before
Changes a decorational block to have too different of a main color (bamboo block top, TNT)
Changes a dyed block to have a different color at all (candles, terracotta)
Changes something to look too much like another thing (splash and lingering potion, map)
Changes something that has too many elements so it makes the thing look too unrecognizable (fishing rod)
Changes are impossible unless this is made into a shader pack (lead)
Changes something to look worse (speed status effect)
Other conditions may apply

Text changes:
Removed the space after ' in "Bottle o' Experience" (now "Bottle o'Experience). This is to be grammatically consistent with "Jack o'Lantern" as well as to other words in the real world
Death messages have been changed a lot in order to be more consistent, still contains the same essence as the original messages though ("X was squashed by a falling anvil" is now "X was squashed by Anvil". "X was killed by [Intentional Game Design]" is now "X was blown up by [Intentional Game Design]".
